Lyrebyrds – Wounded Animal EP
Lyrebirds are birds of two species living in Australia. They are especially known for having the most complexly-muscled vocal organ of all songbirds, which provides them with a “superb ability to mimic natural and artificial sounds from their environment”. Their own song is a mix of a small individual repertoire they were born with and a number of other mimicked sounds or noises. *
Lyrebyrds – in a somewhat more fancy spelling – are a young indie-pop trio from Denmark who released their first EP “Wounded Animal” earlier this year on January 17th with the help of songwriter and producer Brian Batz (Sleep Party People).
When they themselves described their music as mixture between The Cure, The XX, Beach House and Crystal Castles, I was more than hooked. Other than their bird-ish namesake they aren’t really imitating anything existing though, but rather creating some unique, vulnerable and dreamy synthie-pop-sound-universe which is topped off with singer Thorbjørn Elmén’s corresponding voice. What they have in common with the birds is a stunning ability of setting and combining those different sound elements – an impression that leaves me curious about whatever comes next.
